Anabas

In southern and southeast Asia, as well as in the Philippine Islands, there is a small fish anabas the size of our crucian carp. It can live without water for a long time, since she has more lungs besides the gills. Therefore, the anabas often leaves a river or pond where it lives to "walk" to the rice plantations. In the summer heat, when the lakes dry up, the anabas is sent to look for new housing - deeper ponds or rivers, while a peculiar compass is his nose. Anabas moves usually at night, using the teeth of the fins and tail. Thousands of these fish move in the direction of the nearest pond. Anabas with a body length of 10 to 25 cm in 1 hour can creep up to 100 m, and can be outside the water (subject to high humidity) for several days. If, during such an anabas resettlement, a day catches, these fish hide in the shadow between the stones, or climb trees, so as not to be baked on a heated, like a frying pan, the earth.

If the ponds dry up completely, and not Anabas is near new, it buries itself in the mud and over the months, is without water, falling into hibernation until it comes time to rain. Anabas is very gluttonous. In nature, it feeds on small fish, earthworms and other invertebrates.

Knowing the habits of these fish, local fishermen go fishing at that time not with fishing rods, but with shovels, digging an anabas straight out of the ground or shaking it off the trees.

It is interesting that the anabas, being in the water, can not do without fresh air. Every 18 minutes he emerges from the depths to breathe air. Activity manifests in the evening and night. The aquarium must contain Anabas well with attached cover slip located at a height of 10 cm above the water surface (otherwise the fish jumping out of air can strike on it). In the aquarium put thickets of plants, various shelters (stones, snags), and also leave free space for swimming (and for spawning). Begin the maintenance with a group of young fish, adults get on very well. When catching them, it is necessary to use either a glass or plastic vessel, because the fish net can be caught by thorns.
