Why these black island do not have even the thinnest layer of the soil? Why not see here any tree, bush, grass? Finally, what is the mysterious black rocks, they consist of?

Unlike most oceanic islands, the islands of St. Peter and St. Paul are not of volcanic origin. They consist, most likely periodita. On the morning of February 16, 1832 Black island visited by Charles Darwin in the first stage of his trip around the world.

English scientist lucky enough to solve the mystery of unusual rocks that make up the black island. It was found that these rocks are the oldest of all known in the world. Their age was more than 4 billion. Years! It's a little less of the scientists calculated the age of our planet!

Scientists have found that the island consist of black rock that makes up the Earth's upper mantle.

These black island has nothing to do with the volcanic islands of the Atlantic Ocean. Scientists believe that this happened as a result of a giant earthquake. Thanks to the huge pressure, large chunks of the upper mantle have been squeezed out of the ground and thrown to the surface. When it happened, and why it is in this region of the globe, it remains unclear.

It turned out that the rock that makes up the black island, is not a single one of its kind. The same "old age" mysterious rocks were found at the bottom of the Indian Ocean.
