Assyria is ancient land of Ashur - located in northern Mesopotamia, along the banks of the Tigris.

The Assyrian nation has developed in the 13th century BC and in 11-7 centuries BC Assyria turns into a powerful state. The kings of Assyria have extended its authority throughout the territory of Mesopotamia, have created a powerful and unified state, using Mesopotamia as a base, with fire and sword extended their domination of the vast territory from the Sinai Peninsula to Armenia, from Asia Minor to Egypt. With the period of greatest prosperity and flourishing Assyrian linked its last capital, Nineveh.

The terms of the search fields Bott narrowed down to a huge hill on the left bank of the Tigris near the village Kuyunjik. However, the choice was a failure. The wicked irony: nine years later Henry Layard was here, under the hill Kuyunjik, open the legendary ruins of Nineveh!

In March 1843, in the Bott office there was a certain Arabic and said that he could show him a place full of old bricks with inscriptions. The conductor led a small expedition to the hill located near the village of Khorsabad, 75 miles from Mosul.

But then, standing on top of the mysterious hill, Paul Bott knew that the fate of the evil laugh at him. The fact that he found it Nineveh, Paul Botta was convinced almost until the end of his days. But it was not ... Nineveh! The hill near the ruins of Khorsabad hide another Assyrian capital - Dur-Sharrukin, the residence of King Sargon with a magnificent palace, built in 709 BC, after the conquest of Babylon.

...Plenty of reliefs and sculptures during the excavations were astonishing. Paul Botta sat in the excavation and rubbings quite unusual images of winged animals, figures of bearded men.

Opening Botta has become a worldwide sensation. Egypt was considered until now the cradle of humanity. On the ancient kingdoms of Mesopotamia before only informed the Bible. But the discovery of Paul Bott testified that in Mesopotamia there was really even more ancient civilization than Egypt!

Majestic and fantastic on high at the entrance to the palace of Sargon enormous winged bulls - shedd, guard royal palaces, to protect them from enemies visible and invisible. They are in the high tiara, with arrogant human faces, sparkling eyes, with huge, rectangular, completely twisted curl small beards. A characteristic feature: each bull has five legs. Extra leg created the illusion of an animal steps in the direction of the viewer...

Today the ruins of Dur-Sharrukin have only traces of trenches and fragments of granite boulders. The statues of winged bulls, Shedd can be seen in the Iraqi Museum of Antiquities in Baghdad. The most famous Assyrian reliefs from the royal palaces can found in London's British Museum and the Louvre.
