Maybe it was the roses that were the first plants that the man began to breed for their beauty. Different kinds of wild roses, for example, our dog-rose, could attract the attention of a primitive man. The beginning of the garden culture of roses is lost in ancient times.

Neither the ancient Egyptians nor the ancient Jews were aware of roses. According to historical data, roses flourished only in ancient Persia (Iran) and from there they were borrowed by Greeks.

Botanists are also very interested in wild roses. One of such wild roses is us all the familiar dog rose. His botanists are called in Latin - a rose of a canina, ie... a rose of a dog.

All kinds of wild roses botanists number more than a hundred. Of these, about a third can be found in Europe, in part, however, this will be roses brought in by gardeners from Asia and Africa and then ravaged by European soil. All wild roses, like our wild rose, are usually in a wild state non-marble. Flowers - either individual, larger, or collected in clusters, smaller - come in different colors: pink, purple, scarlet, pale yellow, quite white, etc. Among the wild roses there are several curly. The "berry" berries contain a lot of antiscorbutic vitamin "C" - a valuable therapeutic product.

The fertile corner of our Southern Crimea, the Caucasus, the south of France, Italy - these are the most favorable places for the culture of the rose.

Today, gardeners continue to excel in obtaining new and new varieties of roses. They have long been trying to get black roses. The flowers of this colors, which physicists would recognize as real black, does not exist at all; but gardeners are now planting roses of a dark red color, which, with a dim evening light, they can perfectly go for black. Long since dreamed gardeners get blue roses. On the initiative of Goethe, for this purpose roses are grown in greenhouses with glazing of blue color. As if it gives a bluish tint to the roses, but no one has grown a real blue or blue rose.
