The chipset

The chipset is a basic system logic chip set that defines the architecture of interaction between all the major subsystems of the computer. In fact, the chipset defines all functional possibilities of motherboard.

The chipset consists of two chips, called the north (North Bridge) and south bridges (South Bridge). These bridges connect different communication buses and interfaces.

North bridge chipset is responsible for the interaction with RAM (memory bus), interaction with the central processor (system bus), interaction with the graphics subsystem (AGP Bus) and the interaction with the south bridge. That is, the north bridge controls the flow of the four tires.

North bridge chipset, among other things, includes: a cache memory controllers that interface between the processor bus and PCI buses, AGP. All this is implemented on a single chip. The operating frequency of this chip is the clock frequency of the motherboard. Modern chip north bridge operate at high frequencies and therefore are additionally equipped with cooling devices. They are easy to recognize on the motherboard - they are always closed radiator, perhaps even with a fan, and are located in close proximity to the processor.

In contrast to the high-speed north bridge, which is connected with rapid components, south bridge connected with the relatively slow components and peripheral devices - hard drives, USB interface, etc. It should be noted that the same type of chip south bridge can be used, as a rule, a few sets of the system logic, i.e. can work with several types of north bridge.

There are chipsets, markedly different from the traditional scheme. For example, the processors for LGA 1156 socket functionality the north bridge (connection to the graphics card and memory) is fully integrated into the processor itself, and hence for LGA 1156 chipset consists of a south bridge coupled to the processor through the DMI bus.

The speed of the motherboard depends on the model of chipset.
